Manual Resuscitator Bag, also known as ambu bag, self inflating bag, resuscitator bag, ventilation & respiratory bag and resuscitation balloon, is a handheld medical device used to deliver breaths of oxygen in bvm ventilation. Manual resuscitation bag which has disposable and reusable type, is made from PVC, silicone or liquid silicone rubber. BVM Resuscitator Key Components and Functions

1. Reservoir Bag

• - Material: Medical-grade PVC ( Latex Free ) with good elasticity and aging resistance.

• - Volume:

• Adult: ~1600 mL

• Pediatric: ~500 mL

  Neonatal: ~240 mL

  - Features:

  Manual compression delivers airflow, though rebound is slower than silicone.

  2. One-Way Valve System

• (1) Intake Valve (Umbrella Valve / Duckbill Valve

• Function: Allows ambient air or oxygen to enter the bag while preventing gas leakage during compression.

• Location: Typically at the air intake port (connected to the oxygen inlet).

• (2) Patient Valve (Outlet Valve / Exhalation Valve)

• Function:

• Opens during exhalation to release CO₂ and prevent rebreathing.

• Directs gas to the patient’s airway during compression.

• Location: At the patient connection (mask or endotracheal tube).

• Types:

• Passive Exhalation Valve: Opens based on pressure differences (common in standard BVMs).

• PEEP Valve (Positive End-Expiratory Pressure Valve): Maintains airway pressure to prevent alveolar collapse (used in ARDS or hypoxemic patients).

• (3) Pressure Relief Valve (Pop-Off Valve)

• Function: Automatically opens if pressure exceeds a safe threshold (typically 40-60 cmH₂O) to prevent barotrauma (lung injury).

• (4) Oxygen Reservoir Valve

• Function: When connected to oxygen, it stores gas in the reservoir bag to increase FiO₂ (up to 90%+).

• Location: Connected between the oxygen inlet and reservoir bag.

• 3. Full Face Mask

• - Material: PVC & Silicone mask cushion.

• - Design: Transparent or semi-transparent for monitoring oral/nasal secretions.

• 4. Oxygen Inlet

• Compatible with oxygen sources (recommended flow: 10–15 L/min) to increase FiO₂.

The PVC Ambu Bag is made from PVC (polyvinyl chloride), a common plastic material known for its low cost, durability, and ease of manufacturing. The surface is smooth, and the bag is lightweight. Silicone Ambu Bag (Silicone Resuscitator) is made from medical-grade silicone, which offers excellent flexibility, biocompatibility, and high-temperature resistance (can withstand autoclaving). It is usually opaque or semi-transparent and has a softer texture. The material is highly resistant to aging, meaning it does not easily yellow or harden over time.
