Rubber To Metal Adhesive丨Glue Rubber To Metal丨Rubber Overmolding Prototypes
The Process Of Overmolding Rubber To Metal
Bonding rubber to metal manufacturing process involves four procedures as following.
1. Metal surface/ Substrate surface preparation
The surface of the metal inserts have to be a bit rough and free of oil and contaminate to improve a robust bond. The phosphate dip can be applied to remove all the machine oil and keep the great surface of rubber bonding, this is the cheapest way to deal with the metal surface and also provide the rust inhibition, but not the best one.
There are some other plating or coating will offer better rust inhibition than phosphate dip, such as hexavalent chromate, but due to the temperature in molding process will degrade the plating.
2. Pre-coating the primer to metal
It is necessary to coating primer for rubber to metal glue molding process to bond to the metal substrate and enhance rubber bonding. This operation will combine rubber and metal more precisely and firmly and short the deviation of whole part.
3. Coating the adhesive to metal
The common way to apply adhesive are as follows: dip and dry, spin coat, use machine to spray adhesive automatically and spray manually.
Dipping and spinning is cheaper way when metal substrates all should be wrapped with rubber, but it is not suitable for the application case that the metal parts need to be exposed and will directly contact with the mold. The manual spraying also is cost effective solution than the automated spraying when the quantity is not that large.
4. Placing the metal inserts into the mold cavities
The production efficiency is determined on the metal insert part dimension and volume of the parts. The first is the positioning of the metal insert parts, second pay attention to adjust the mold temperature and pressure to meet the best bonding rubber to metal.

There are mainly four overmolding ways
Compression Molding
Transfer Molding
Plastic Injection Molding
Liquid silicone rubber injection Molding LSR&LIM
The most effective way to stick/glue/adhesive/adhere/attaching rubber to metal is use injection molding and transfer molding manufacturing process. The process require a two step preparation of the metal prior to molding the rubber.
1. Need Which Rubber Material?
2. What Is The Substrate?
3. Which Bonding Type Required?
1)Encapsulation
2)Chemical Bonding With Glue/Adhesive
3)Gluing After Curing
4.Glue/Adhesive Testing
1. How to choose rubber material type?
Better Silicone use currently market common rubber and thermoset material to give the rubber type solutions in manufacturing process. Blow is the physical property table guide for the popular rubber bonding material. It is just a rough guide from Better Silicone--contact us, our engineer team will offer expert assistance with selecting the suitable rubber overmolding material for application case.

1. Which Substrate Material Required To Be The Mating Part?
When we choose the Substrate Material for Rubber Mating part, we need to consider the following conditions of Substrate Options.
1) Temperature to be considered in bonding rubber to metal molding
For example, rubber needs to be vulcanized at above 200-300degree, such temperature require any substrate chosen for chemical adhesion need to withstand such high temperature for a period of time, which most of the plastic material cannot survive because of the low melting point. Thus, silicone plastic overmolding need to pay more attention to such material substrate issues.
2) Metal Substrates Surface Treatment Before Glue Rubber To Metal
Before rubber bonding process, metal substrates surface need to be cleaned by chemical agent and make them dry, to prevent the metal surface from oil strained &oil contamination and oxide layer etc., then coating the primer by painting or spraying then also make the primer dry, generally rubber material can not self-adhesive with substrate, so proper glue or primer should be applied to the metal substrates.
3) Consideration of Bonding Type To Metal
After confirmed the rubber material and metal inserts substrate, the bonding type is the issue to consider. Including the cost effective solution, bonding strength requirement, the impact and direction force as well as position in bonding. Different bonding type have a variety of applications in rubber overmoulding products.
4) Necessary Testing For Adhesive Force
After overmolding rubber to metal, the testing experiment of the adhesive force is required for knowing the actual bond/tear strength of the rubber with metal. Generally the rubber to metal adhesive tear strength should be stronger than rubber itself. Better Silicone will help to confirm good bond on the finished product.
