What Is Silicone Injection Molding?
Silicone Injection Molding & Moulding (LSR Injection Molding) is a production technique for making high‑precision, complex‑shaped, flexible and durable silicone components in large volumes, by injecting liquid silicone material into molds.
Silicone Injection Mold Types
1. Classification by Runner / Feeding System
Manual Solid‑to‑liquid Transfer Mold
Runs on standard compression presses.
No runner system required.
Simple 2‑plate or 3‑plate mold construction for simple‑geometry parts.
Low tooling cost, minimal material waste.
Low dimensional accuracy, low cycle efficiency due to manual operation.
Automatic Solid‑to‑liquid Transfer Mold
Works with compression presses, equipped with runners and needle‑valve structure for complex‑geometry products.
High production efficiency and improved dimensional precision.
Considerable material waste from runners.

Hot-runner Mold
·Also known as runner‑less mold.
·Integrated heating elements keep silicone material uncured inside runners.
·No needle‑valve structure; simple mold design and lower tooling cost.
·Large material waste; gate trimming is required after molding.
·Mainly used for large‑size LSR components.

Needle‑Valve Cold‑Runner Mold
·Fitted with needle valves for air‑blow seal and injection control.
·Requires dedicated cold manifold plate.
·Higher fabrication cost than hot‑runner molds.
·Very little material waste, saving raw‑material cost.
·Ejection via ejector pins; ideal for high‑volume precision production.

Non‑Needle‑Valve Cold‑Runner Mold
·Lower overall project cost, suitable for prototyping and sampling to validate part geometry.
·Fits products with non‑critical dimensional tolerances, such as baby nipples, silicone spoons and other infant‑care products
·Higher material consumption; silicone may cure inside cold nozzles.
·Shot weight is difficult to control; obvious gate vestiges remain on finished parts.
2. Classification by Molding Machine Type

Compression‑press transfer mold
·Matches manual / automatic solid‑to‑liquid transfer molds.
·Simplified mold structure without complex internal heating / cooling modules.
·High cavity count up to 32‑48 cavities for large daily output.
·Tooling and maintenance costs are economical.
·Typical applications: mobile‑phone SIM trays, watch waterproof parts, electric‑toothbrush accessories, anti‑haze mask components.

Vertical LSR Injection Mold
·Optimized for insert over‑molding. Inserts can be metal, PC, PA, PPSU and other heat‑resistant substrates.
·Typical layout: one upper mold plus two lower molds. Two lower molds rotate 180° alternately. Operators load inserts on one station while the other station runs production cycle to boost throughput.
·Widely adopted in medical, infant‑care, electronics and kitchenware silicone products.

Horizontal LSR Injection Mold
·Finished parts drop automatically via air‑blow ejection.
·Suited for mass production of baby articles (nipples, pacifiers), medical accessories, sealing parts and consumer over‑molded goods.
·Shortcoming: manual insert loading for complex over‑molded parts is less convenient compared with vertical molds.

Common Silicone Materials for
Silicone Injection Molding
A wide variety of silicone formulations can be processed via injection molding to meet different functional needs.
• General‑purpose silicone
Standard material with good elasticity and heat resistance, suitable for most common‑use parts.
• High‑transparency silicone
Delivers clear or translucent appearance, widely used for lighting and visible components.
• High‑strength silicone
Features improved tensile and tear resistance for heavy‑duty industrial seals.
• Flame‑retardant silicone
Formulated to slow flame spread, ideal for electronics and automotive applications.
• Medical‑grade silicone
High biocompatibility for healthcare‑related products.
Key Components of Silicone Injection Molding Machine
![]()
Injector
Pressurizes liquid silicone material and feeds it into the machine.
Operators are able to adjust injection pressure and speed.
Metering Unit
Delivers the two‑part silicone raw materials at a fixed, accurate ratio.
Supply Drums
Storage containers for the base silicone and catalyst.
Pigment containers can also be connected to this pumping system.
Mixer
Combines the two silicone components after they leave the metering unit.
The mixed material is then pushed under pressure toward the mold.
Nozzle
Guides mixed silicone into the mold cavity.
It is usually fitted with an automatic shut‑off valve to prevent leakage and overfilling.
Mold Clamp
Holds and locks the mold tightly during production.
It opens once curing is finished for part ejection.
LSR Injection‑Molding Process
1. Preparation ⬇ | Blend LSR raw materials, control temperature, load inserts, heat the mold and activate the cold‑runner system. |
2. Clamping & Injection ⬇ | Engage automatic mold‑clamping, then inject silicone under atmospheric or vacuum conditions. |
3. Curing ⬇ | Heat the mold to start cross‑linking and turn liquid silicone into solid parts. |
4. Cooling & Demolding | Cool the part inside the mold, eject it, and finish cooling at room temperature. |
